Upton upon Severn - Plastic Bag Free

Makes you think...
Plastic bags global consumption this year:

Plastic alternatives exhibition

Following publicity about the town of Modbury in Devon, in October 2007 Diane put forward the proposal to the Committee that Upton upon Severn should be encouraged to become plastic bag free. Diane & Jackie were tasked with researching the reasons behind and the practicalities of the proposal.

A lot of research was carried out. The overwhelming impression was of the horrors caused by plastic waste throughout the world. Samples of alternatives to plastic - not just bags, but a whole range of shopping and catering goods - were obtained from manufacturers and suppliers.

Diane & Jackie proposed:

  • A leaflet be produced with facts and figures
  • That the Committee speak to all traders individually
  • An exhibition be organised, and suppliers of plastic alternatives be invited
  • A target date of 1st May 2008 be set
  • Upton Tourism & Trade Association, Upton Community Pride, Upton Town Council & Malvern Hills District Council should be approached and asked for their support

The exhibition would include displays, a presentation, and the BBC Natural History Unit's 'Hawai'i - Message in the Waves'

The Committee agreed with the proposals.

  • The Memorial Hall was booked for 11th & 12th January 2008
  • Suppliers were invited to attend the exhibition, or supply samples of their products
  • The leaflet was printed
  • Posters for the exhibition were printed
