An enquiry to Jackie by Judith Taylor regarding a Sweet Pea breeder, via the Upton website, was forwarded to Simon Wilkinson. Extensive research by Simon & Judith culminated in an article in the National Sweet Pea Society Annual 2008. Roger Parsons of the National Sweet Pea Society has been sent some seeds of a variety named 'Prince of Orange' which is believed to be bred by Miss Hemus in 1910. If this is correct, we hope to have some plants in 2010 - 100 years since they were bred! |

A successful litter pick with volunteers and pupils from Hanley Castle High School taking part. The collection by the pupils included a tent! Mercia Rescue provided a boat and Peter & Diane litter picked on the river banks. They found an almost new tarpaulin, a ladder and some large planks of wood. Every piece of 5 black bin bags was plastic waste of some kind, all retrieved from the waterside trees and bushes. It reinforces our 'Plastic Bag Free' message, use alternatives, the single use bags are just a blot on our lovely landscape! |

The paving under the notice board was finished today. We reorganised some of the tubs on the riverfront. The four large, shallower tubs were moved to either end of the display area. This is because the middle of the area gets flooded sooner, and the shallower tubs were being submerged. |

The Environment Agency didn't move the riverside tubs when they put up the flood barriers. The water almost submerged one of the tubs and all of them were standing in it. When the barriers came down the Greengrow compost in the tubs was forked over to help with drying. The mini daffodils & crocus bulbs are all growing well and hopefully won't be affected. |

AGM. This was very well attended. The Committee was re-elected. The awards for the 2007 Local in Bloom competition were awarded by Jenny Redfern, Heart of England in Bloom Co-ordinator. Chairman, Peter Bellamy, gave his report on activities in 2007, including our entry in Britain in Bloom. The 'Friends of Upton in Bloom' was launched. Volunteers who would like to help out with major jobs, like planting up the displays, litter picks, and anything else for which we could do with some help, are invited to give us their contact details so we can let them know what we are planning. Peter Booth brought his presentation that he produced for the FeelGood Festival. He is now converting it to a form suitable for DVD, and updating it with the results of our Britain in Bloom entry. It will be on sale next month. Barbara Hartley gave us £85 which was collected in her 'Mr & Mrs' garden in Dunns Lane during the Summer, and Lavender Beard donated £35 from the takings at the Tudor House Museum where Peter Booth's presentation was shown during the FeelGood Festival. |
