Judging Day

Yet again we were lucky with the weather which was sunny but not too warm. Our day started at about 6.30am with constant checks being made for litter, brushing under seats, and generally making sure the Town looked at its best. Upton Town Council's Mayor, Cllr Paul Thomas was joined by our District Councillor, Cllr Mike Morgan (newly elected Vice-Chairman of Malvern Hills District Council), in welcoming judges Angela Pendleton and Robin Russell. Angela & Robin took the opportunity to sit by the river until judging began with a presentation by Upton in Bloom's Vice-Chairman Peter Bellamy.

The judges visited Upton Primary School to view the new raised beds with Headmaster Alec Holland and Rev Jeff Radcliffe and the very enthusiastic gardeners. They then saw a Forest School class in action. The School Orchestra and Choir played and sang during the judges' visit.

A visit to the Cemetery and allotments took in the Chapel, which had been beautifully decorated with stunning flower displays created by Dorothy Harris.

The tour of the town ended on the Old Churchyard, with the School Orchestra and Choir on top of the bank playing to the obvious enjoyment of the people gathered to welcome the judges. Sandy Barker of Tiltridge Vineyard and Clives Fruit Farm displayed their products, Leslie & Ruth Probert brought along the Upton Youth Band display boards, Richard Hannah was joined by Coenwolf the cat, the winning scarecrow from the Easter Monday celebrations also came along.

Angela and Robin then judged the Wellie Garden competition. (Winners names to follow.) I particularly liked Leslie Probert's entry featuring a particularly fine specimen of Minimus Verdi Gumbootus! The winners were:

Under 11 years: 1st William Hughes; 2nd Olivia Martin; an un-named blue wellie
11-18 years: no entries, which was a bit sad
Over 18 years: 1st Amanda Dawson; 2nd Peter Burton; 3rd Lesley & Alan Probert

Following the judging, the judges and visitors went to the Tudor House Museum for a delicious buffet. Most of the food had been donated by local hotels, pubs and restaurants.

The Upton in Bloom Committee would like to thank everyone who has helped during the year, and on the day. We couldn't have done it without you!
